ABOUT THE AUTHOR OF GOOD BUSINESS PROJECT
My name is Ana and my whole life has been a learning curve on how to “save the nature” or what to do about the environmental issues. When I was growing up, I wanted to be a vet.
Poor waste management in Cameroon
I ended up studying Ecology instead. I was so sure that getting into Conservation field will help me make an impact. My studies took me to Cameroon where I had a chance to experience the other side. I saw poverty, waste management issues, drinking water problems, poaching, and illegal trade… and I couldn’t do anything about it. All that made me think how much a scientist can actually do to change the situation. I had so many more questions that didn’t let me settle for a career in academic research.
Truth about resource management in Italy
The aforementioned journey continued and the next stop was Italy where I learned about politics while working for an international NGO in the field of conflict resolution. It was such an eye-opener for me as a scientist who was previously involved only with taxonomy and animal population density maps. This chance I got to understand how the root causes of poverty, poor resource management, and pollution were all related to international governance completely changed the way I saw the world. I couldn’t go back to science. It didn’t make any sense to me.
Power of community in Indonesia
Hence, my search continued in Indonesia. I learned Italian Danone was the main water supplier for a country stricken by massive water pollution caused by outsourcing production. This fact made me think even harder: what was the thing I could do to address the environmental issues? Was there anything to do at all?
In Indonesia, I also learned about the power of art and community.
Entrepreneurship in Albania
But my journey didn’t stop there. Impredictably, it took me to Albania. There I discovered about the power of social entrepreneurship – or how to start a business that’s good for the community.
Time to Act is Now
And this is how I never got back to science.
I started believing in the power of a community of like-minded people that can make a change by making conscious choices.
Therefore, I invite you to join my journey and to discover together how to make better business models for our planet.
